Developed for the introduction of the Day-Date, this three-piece link bracelet with semi-circular links continues to shape the model’s unmistakable appearance. Unlike many other Rolex collections, the Day-Date is produced exclusively in precious metal.

Rolex Day-Date 36 or Day-Date 40?

One of the main decisions when buying a current Day-Date is the choice between a 36 and a 40 millimetre case. The Day-Date 36 follows the classic proportions that defined the model for decades. It appears compact, traditional and elegant.

The Day-Date 40 has a more prominent presence on the wrist while retaining the characteristic elegance of the collection. The better size therefore depends on personal taste and preferred proportions rather than on a universal rule.

Well-known current yellow-gold references include the Day-Date 36 reference 128238 and the Day-Date 40 reference 228238.

Which Day-Date sizes have existed?

The current Rolex collection offers the Day-Date in 36 and 40 millimetres. Rolex also produced the larger Day-Date II with a case diameter of 41 millimetres. References from the 218xxx series belong to this generation. The Day-Date II was later replaced by the present Day-Date 40.

There is no regular Rolex Day-Date with a 42 millimetre case. Exact reference numbers are therefore important when descriptions used in the market are inconsistent.

What is the Rolex President bracelet?

The President bracelet consists of three rows of semi-circular links and was developed in 1956 for the Day-Date. Compared with the sportier Oyster bracelet, it gives the watch a more refined and immediately recognisable character.

On a pre-owned Day-Date, the bracelet condition is an important part of the overall assessment. Depending on age and wear, the links may show different levels of play. The case and bracelet should therefore always be considered together.

Which materials are available?

The Day-Date is offered exclusively in precious metal. Depending on reference and generation, models are available in 18-carat yellow gold, 18-carat white gold, 18-carat Everose gold and platinum.

Yellow gold represents the most traditional and instantly recognisable Day-Date look. Everose gold has a warmer appearance, while white gold can look considerably more discreet. Platinum versions are distinguished by their weight, rarity and often particularly exclusive dial combinations.

Fluted, smooth or diamond-set bezel?

The bezel has a major influence on the character of a Day-Date. The fluted bezel is the classic choice and reflects light in a distinctive way. Depending on reference and generation, smooth bezels and diamond-set bezels are also available.

Diamond-set bezels and hour markers can be factory configurations, while watches with later modifications also exist in the market. The exact specification and originality should therefore be checked carefully.

Which dials are particularly sought after?

The variety of Day-Date dials is exceptionally broad. It includes classic champagne, black, silver and blue dials as well as diamond-set versions, stone dials, ombré effects and special configurations.

Rare materials or discontinued designs can be of particular interest to collectors. However, the dial should always be assessed together with its reference, production period and original configuration.

Important modern Day-Date references

Among the best-known current references are 128238, 128239 and 128235 for the Day-Date 36, as well as 228238, 228239, 228235 and 228236 for the Day-Date 40. The final digits and the full configuration indicate the material and exact version.

Earlier five- and six-digit references remain important for buyers who prefer a particular case shape, movement generation, dial or bracelet character.

New, unworn or pre-owned – what should you look for?

For a pre-owned Day-Date, relevant points include the condition of the case, President bracelet, clasp, bezel, crystal, dial and hands, as well as the technical function of the day and date displays. Possible earlier refinishing and the originality of components may also affect the assessment.

How important is a full set?
